Sidewalk Chalk Recipe

2c   Plaster of Paris

1c   Water

1-2t   Powdered Tempera Paint

Stir Plaster of Paris and Water slowly for about 1-2 minutes.  The mixture will be lumpy at first and then the consistency of thick pudding.  Add Powdered Tempera Paint and stir.   Pour into molds, made from Foam Sheets (see below) and tap to smooth top.  Don’t wait as mixture is hardening.  Place molds upright on wax paper.  Chalk is ready to use within 24 hours and lasts much longer than store bought sidewalk chalk!  Recipe makes about 5 pieces of sidewalk chalk. Recipe can be cut in half to make several colors. Great outdoor summer project!

Foam Tube Molds:  Cut Foamies Craft Foam into 3 ¼” x 4 ¼” pieces (or choose your own size) & create cylinders (like a paper towel roll) by placing packing tape down seam and across bottom opening.  Reinforce mold by taping around tube.   Foamies molds allow sidewalk to dry thoroughly & are easy to remove. 

You can also create your own mold.  We tried Tissue Rolls, however, the card board stuck to the dried sidewalk chalk.  Waxy paper cups worked but made the chalk an odd size.
